Battery Backups, chosen for Florida

Six UPS units for homes and home offices, picked from the failures I see in customer machines after every summer storm — not from spec sheets and unboxing videos.

Most of the dead drives I see in summer aren't from a single dramatic event. They're from the dozen brownouts the customer didn't even notice — the lights flickering during a Tuesday-afternoon storm, the AC compressor cycling under a rolling-blackout protocol, the half-second sag when a transformer two streets over takes a hit. A surge protector — and we covered those back in Issue 01 — catches the spike. A UPS catches the sag. You need both. They're not the same product.

The picks below are split into two sections because the cheapest UPSes that work fine for a cable modem don't work for a modern PC. I won't get into the technical reason here — you'll see it called out in the field-note callouts on each pick where it actually matters. Tier the picks by what you're spending and what you're protecting; pick a number; buy the unit; plug it in before next storm season starts.

Section A · For your home

When the lights flicker — three picks for the house.

Three tiers here: a budget unit for networking gear and older PCs, a mainstream workhorse for a typical desktop, and a stretch pick that's the answer for any current-generation Ryzen or Intel build. Most homeowners belong on the second or third pick. The first one is deliberately limited in scope — and the field note explains exactly why.

Smallest unit I'll recommend without flinching. For a cable modem, an ONT, a router, and maybe an Apple TV, this rides out the brownouts that kill drives during summer storms — and that's the actual job here. You're not protecting a workstation. You're keeping the network up so the rest of your gear doesn't lose its connection state during a four-second sag.

The replaceable battery matters. UPSes with sealed batteries are landfill in three years — the cells wear out and you throw the whole unit away. APC's RBC line means in 2029 you spend $40 on a new battery and keep the same chassis for another three years. That's the right way to buy these.

⚠ Field note This is for networking gear and older PCs only. Don't plug a modern desktop into this. Most current Ryzen builds and 12th-gen-and-newer Intel boards use active-PFC power supplies, and they treat this unit's simulated-sine output as bad enough power to trip into shutdown. Symptom: the UPS goes to battery for a normal half-second sag and your PC also shuts down. If you've got a current-generation desktop, jump to Pick 03.

Best-value workhorse in the guide. AVR — automatic voltage regulation — is the spec to care about on this tier. It corrects undervoltage and overvoltage without dropping to battery, which means more cycles preserved for the actual outage. The 6+6 outlet split is the right shape: PC, monitor, modem, router on battery; printer, lamp, non-essentials on surge-only. The LCD tells you remaining runtime in real numbers, not a vague row of LEDs.

I install this one for managed-service customers more than any other unit on this list. It's the right answer for "I have a desktop, I want it to ride out brownouts, and I don't want to think about it again for five years."

⚠ Field note Same active-PFC compatibility warning as Pick 01 — this is still a simulated sine wave. If you've got an older desktop with a non-PFC PSU, or you're protecting a small-form-factor PC built before 2018, you're fine. For anything current — Ryzen 5000 / 7000, Intel 12th gen and up — skip to Pick 03 even though it costs more. The premium pays for itself the first time the UPS doesn't trip your PSU into shutdown.

The sweet-spot pick of the entire guide. Pure sine wave at a price that, two years ago, only existed on Eaton or APC Smart-UPS units. Compatible with every active-PFC desktop power supply on the market. AVR. Color-coded LCD. The PowerPanel software (Windows, macOS, Linux) handles graceful shutdown — point it at your machine and it'll save your work and power down cleanly when battery hits a threshold you choose.

For most readers — a single modern desktop, a couple of monitors, the modem and router on the same circuit — this is the unit. Spend an extra hour reading the manual to set the runtime threshold and the auto-shutdown delay; that hour pays for itself the first time you're not home when the power goes out.

⚠ Field note Order by exact SKU. The trailing "a" is load-bearing. Earlier non-"a" units had a documented coil-whine and fan-cycling complaint that CyberPower revised in this hardware refresh. If the Amazon listing says CP1500PFCLCD without the "a", or doesn't show it clearly in the title, scroll until you find one that does — the price is the same. Verify on receipt against the label on the back of the unit.

Section B · For your home office

When the work has to keep working — three picks for the office.

Three more tiers, this time built around pure sine wave as the floor — non-negotiable for a workstation, a NAS, or anything you're billing hours from. These run more expensive than the Section A picks, but they're built to last a decade and serviced rather than replaced.

When you need APC build quality, a hot-swap battery — replace the cells without powering down the unit — and PowerChute's mature scripted-shutdown ecosystem, this is the Smart-UPS that doesn't yet break the $500 line. The chassis is heavier than the CyberPower equivalents on purpose; the larger transformer and better isolation show up as cleaner output under partial load. The LCD is utilitarian rather than slick, but it tells you what you need.

The hot-swap battery is the real differentiator. On the CyberPower units in Section A, replacing a battery means powering the unit down — which, if the UPS is running a NAS that you don't want to shut down, is a problem. The SMC1500 lets you swap cells while it's running on AC. For a home office where the NAS holds work files and downtime is real money, that's the feature you're paying for.

⚠ Field note You're paying about double Pick 03 for similar VA. The premium goes to build quality, the hot-swap battery, and PowerChute. If you're not going to use either of those — that is, if you'd just power the unit down to swap batteries when the time comes, and you'd let Windows handle low-battery shutdown — then Pick 03 does the same job for half the money. Be honest with yourself before stepping up.

The pick when you've graduated past "one PC plus monitor" into "PC, two monitors, a Synology, a switch, and the cable modem all on one circuit, please." Convertible chassis means it lives in a rack if you've built one, or stands vertically next to a desk if you haven't. The SNMP card slot is empty out of the box but takes the RMCARD that turns this into a fully network-managed UPS — useful if you eventually run scripts against it from a Synology or a Proxmox host.

Synology and QNAP both speak USB-UPS to this unit out of the box, so your NAS can shut itself down cleanly during an outage even without the SNMP card. That single feature is what tips a lot of home-office buyers over from Pick 04 to this one.

⚠ Field note The fan is louder than the tower-only CyberPowers. If this lives in a quiet office and you're noise-sensitive, that's a genuine factor — not a deal-breaker, but worth knowing before you unbox. Also: at ~30 lbs it's a two-handed lift. Have somewhere stable picked out before it arrives.

This is the unit you buy when you've actually thought about it and the answer is "I need hours of runtime, not minutes." The 5P's headline feature is EBM compatibility — external battery modules that daisy-chain off the back and turn 8 minutes of runtime into 30, 60, or 120 minutes depending on how many you stack. For a home lab with a Proxmox host, a NAS, and a managed switch, that's the difference between "a 20-minute outage takes down the lab" and "a 20-minute outage is invisible."

Eaton's build quality is legitimately enterprise-grade — the kind of unit you put in once and don't think about for ten years. The Gigabit network management card slot supports their entire monitoring ecosystem, and the unit speaks NUT (Network UPS Tools) cleanly, which matters if you're running anything Linux-based downstream.

⚠ Field note Overkill for most readers. If your honest answer to "do I actually need extended runtime" is "I think it would be cool" — buy Pick 04 or Pick 05 instead and put the $300 toward something else. The 5P's value proposition is the EBM. Without that, you're paying a brand premium for a slightly nicer LCD. APC's SMT1500 is a comparable alternative if you'd rather buy into the APC management ecosystem instead.

  • Heavier and deeper than equivalent CyberPower units

How we rated

This guide deliberately uses tighter, lower ratings than most affiliate buyer's guides. None of these picks earned a 5.0. None earned a 4.8. The top of the calibrated scale here is 4.7 — and it's earned. The point of the rating system isn't to tell you they're all great. It's to tell you which one is the one if you only buy one.

For each pick, I cross-referenced independent reviews from PCMag, Wirecutter, Tom's Hardware, and ServeTheHome; long-term user reports from Reddit's r/homelab, r/Synology, and r/buildapc; and what I see in the field after every storm season — the unit that I picked up alongside a customer's dead PC, the brand that survived in a humid Florida garage, the model that I had to special-order a battery for three years later. Amazon star ratings, which are heavily gamed in this category, were the lowest-weight signal.

If a future hardware revision or firmware update materially changes my assessment of any of these products, I'll update the guide and note the date.
