§ Why it matters
I'm Jeff Hamilton, owner of Computer Medic Repair & Service LLC — the same person folks around here call when a laptop dies or a hard drive stops spinning. But a lot of what I do isn't computers at all. It's pulling family memories off old tapes before those memories disappear for good.
Here's the honest truth about tape: it doesn't age well. The magnetic coating breaks down a little more every year. Colors fade, the picture starts to drop out, and in our humid Florida climate you'll eventually see mold or the dreaded "sticky-shed," where the tape gums up and can't be played at all. The footage on that cassette is at its best today — it will never look better than it does right now.
And the players are vanishing. When did you last see a working VHS deck, or a Hi8 camcorder that still powers on? Once those machines are gone, the tapes that need them become unwatchable. What's on them — the wedding, a baby's first steps, grandparents who aren't with us anymore — can't be re-shot. That's the part I take seriously: this is the only copy, and it's worth getting onto something that lasts.
Old printed photos are on the same clock — fading, yellowing, and cracking, and Florida humidity doesn't help. The same logic applies: scan them now, and fix the damage while the print still has something to work from.
§ What I digitize
VD·01 · Tape transfer
VHS, VHS-C, Hi8, Video8, and Digital8 transferred frame-for-frame to digital.
VD·02 · Camcorder
MiniDV and old camcorder cassettes, including the hard-to-play formats most places turn away.
VD·03 · Output
Delivered as digital files on a USB stick, copied to your own drive, or uploaded to the cloud so you can download and share them anywhere. DVDs are available on request, too.
VD·04 · Editing
Optional: trimming dead air, adding simple titles, and combining tapes into one watchable movie.
§ Old photos, too
It isn't just tapes. Those boxes of old prints in the closet are worth saving too. I scan them to digital so they're safe and easy to share, and where time has done damage — a tear, a crease, color that's washed out — I can repair it.
PR·01 · Scan
High-resolution scans of your old printed photos, saved to USB, your drive, or the cloud.
PR·02 · Repair
Careful digital repair of rips, creases, missing corners, and stains on damaged or one-of-a-kind prints.
PR·03 · Color
Bring back washed-out, yellowed color and revive prints that have faded with age.
§ How it works
Step 01 · Tell me what you have
Send a message or give me a call with roughly how many tapes you've got and what formats they are. I'll give you a straight quote, and we'll arrange the handoff.
Step 02 · I transfer them carefully
Your tapes are handled right here in the area and never mailed off to some far-off warehouse. I capture each one, check the footage, and author it to whatever output you chose.
Step 03 · You get them back
Your original tapes come back to you, along with your new digital files — on a USB stick, your own drive, or uploaded to the cloud (a DVD too, if you'd rather). Nothing leaves the area, and you keep everything.
§ Why me
Your memories never leave the area or get dropped in a box bound for a warehouse you've never heard of. They're handled by me — the same local technician behind the 4.9-star repair reviews — one tape at a time, carefully, with everything explained in plain English. When the footage can't be replaced, who handles it matters. I treat it like it's my own family's.
